Scripture Memory

First off, I admit, I'm not the greatest at memorizing, well... anything, really! But the more I read God's word and "hide" it in my heart, the less anxious and fearful I am- and that's a very good thing! So, here are a few ideas I have found helpful~

1) Pick a verse or passage that speaks to you. If it doesn't hit home, it won't stay long. During your daily Bible reading, keep your eyes out for it! If nothing "pops" out to you, pray and ask God to speak to you through His word. He knows what we need to hear most. It's His delight to speak to us- it is His word, after all!

2) Write it down. You've dug for treasure and found it, now take it to heart! Write it in your journal, on your mirror, on a paper to put in your pocket, print it off and stick it on your cereal box to read every morning! Make it the home screen on your phone, your computer's backdrop. Find a song with that verse put to music and put it on your MP3 player. Say it out loud and record yourself to listen to it later.

3) Memorize with someone. Find a friend or family member who will listen to you recite regularly. Being consistent is the key, accountability is great, but don't rely on them to ask you to recite, be ready whether they check you or not!

~1 Peter 3:15~

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:
and be ready always to give an answer
to every man that asketh you a reason
of the hope that is in you
with meekness and fear:"

  1. Those are some great tips, Courtney- I always have notes in my pocket- that's a great idea. I also heard about a website, memverse.com, that has really helped me memorize Scripture. Of course, it can't replace being put all over your room, but it's helped me as well. :-)
